THE SAVOIR PRÉSERVER

At a time when we can no longer deny the negative impact of human activity on earthly ecosystems, BONASTRE stands for sensible living: buy less, but better.

Taking a stand against the accelerated pace of fashion and overconsumption, BONASTRE offers a collection of essential leather goods that are made to last.

Aware of the environmental impacts associated with the production of leather, BONASTRE is committed since its inception to doing better.

The main environmental impact associated with leather production comes from tanning. Tanning is the process that saturates the hides, making the leather flexible, rot-resistant and suitable for use in leather goods. Most leathers nowadays are tanned with chromium, a toxic chemical with disastrous consequences for natural ecosystems and human health. This is why, since its creation in 2011, BONASTRE has worked exclusively with vegetable tanned hides, a traditional process based on vegetable tannins of mimosa, chestnut bark, oak bark or even its root, with an olive oil finish.

Still, from climate change to biodiversity and animal welfare, the environmental issues associated with leather production are many.

So why leather? We believe it remains the most sustainable option when considering a bag’s entire lifecycle, in particular when it comes to durability.

BONASTRE continues to actively search for more sustainable alternatives that could ensure the same level of performance. In the meantime, we are committed to sourcing the highest quality leather, using only skins recovered from the European meat industry and processed in tanneries that have achieved LWG certification - the number one, globally recognized, auditing body representing responsible leather sourcing to the industry and consumers.

Furthermore, the lining of our leather essentials is made with 100% recycled cotton, as are the protective bags we use as packaging.

As for production, BONASTRE’s workshop is powered with renewable energies and uses only water or starch-based manufacturing products.

We are committed to constant improvement and are currently working to establish internal guidelines to raise our environmental standards.
